Carlton coach sacked after provocative “sack me or back me” call

The AFL's longest-standing coach, Mick Malthouse, has been given the boot by Carlton after an explosive SEN interview.

After toeing the line for months, Mick Malthouse has finally met his end. And it was an untimely one.

The Carlton coach has been sacked in the middle of the AFL season, after he gave an explosive and provocative interview to radio station, SEN.

“Sack me or back me,” said Malthouse in the interview, when asked about Carlton’s stance that they would make a decision on his future “after a couple of games”.

But apparently, Carlton would rather sack him than back him.

After the interview, Carlton’s top men called an unscheduled meeting in order to discuss the fallen coach, where they eventually decided that his time was over.

“One thing in this business is really clear, everyone knows coach, president, CEO, captain, head of footy… have to be [in] lock-step every step of the way and our view was that wasn’t the case,” said Carlton CEO, Steven Trigg, who explained that Malthouse’s interview to SEN resulted in a “loss of trust” with the board.

It was, it seems, the final straw, for the Carlton chiefs who terminated his contract soon after.

Assistant Coach, John Barker, will replace Malthouse as interim coach.

Carlton is currently sitting on the bottom of the ladder, with only one win out of eight games.
