When Arizona mum Andrea Temarantz noticed a white glow over her four month old baby’s eye in photos, she thought that there was something wrong with her camera. But when the glow persisted, despite a new camera she decided to investigate.
People reports that whenTemarantz decided to take Ryder, who has Down’s Syndrome, to the doctor. He was quickly refered to a specialist who diagnosed Ryder with retinoblastoma, a rare type of eye cancer.
The condition isn’t usually picked up until children are 12-18 months, so being diagnosed so early gives Ryder a 99 percent chance of recovery.
This isn’t the first time retinoblastoma has made headlines. Noah Shaw was also diagnosed with the rare form of cancer seven years ago when he was 3 months old. Although Noah underwent surgery to remove his right eye and is currently doing well, his dad Bryan Shaw created an iPhone app to detect different eye conditions in children.
“It’s going to be tough to eliminate vision loss, but this software can eliminate the death associated with this disease just by early diagnosis,” Shaw told People. “At the worst, they lose one or both of their eyes – but they still have their life.”
