Brisbane mother builds cage for ice-addicted son

You know your son is going to end up dead, or severely hurting himself or someone else. There's no first car or university for him, there is just keeping him alive.

In an effort to cope with her son’s ongoing ice-fuelled aggression, one desperate mother has spent more than $3,000 on building a ‘cage’ to keep him safe.

This Brisbane mother, whose teenage son has been addicted to ice for years, claimed she built the cage because she had no other option to protect her son.

“I am just one person begging for help and there is no one to help us,” the mother told The Morning Bulletin.

“You know your son is going to end up dead, or severely hurting himself or someone else,” she continued, “There’s no first car or university for him, there is just keeping him alive.”

The cage, which features metal bars on the doors and windows inside her house, was built to protect her son from himself, she claims.

Speaking to The Morning Bulletin, the mother revealed that her son’s addiction spiralled out of control when he moved on to methamphetamines after being addicted to alcohol.

Since the beginning of his downward spiral, the teenager has allegedly attempted suicide more than “a dozen times”.

“I rang every rehab centre in Australia; you name them, I’ve rang them,” said the mother, “They wouldn’t touch [him] because he is too suicidal.”

“People don’t view it as being sick because it is self-inflicted, but it wouldn’t be self-inflicted if he had the mental health support in the beginning.”

“They’re almost not your child anymore, you don’t know where their heart is,” said the woman.

“It’s not just my kid; there are lots of kids in Rockhampton with addictions. From bad homes and good homes, it is across the board.”

Since the building of her ‘cage’, the woman has been informed that the police are planning to charge her with deprivation of liberty.
