Victorian police say they have received reports of a body near Anglesea, just 10km north-west of Aireys Inlet where missing Melbourne woman Elisa Curry was last seen.
Police said a pathologist would have to first examine the remains and determine if they were human and, if they are, establish who they belong to and cause of death.
A police spokesperson said it was too early to definitively link the remains with Ms Curry’s disappearance late last month.
The mum was discovered to be missing when her husband and children returned to the family’s holiday home on Victoria’s Surf Coast two weeks ago after watching the AFL grand final in Melbourne the day before.
Her phone was missing and the family dog was later found roaming the streets unharmed.
Last Friday, Victoria Police Inspector Peter Seel said the odds of authorities finding Ms Curry Alive was becoming increasingly unlikely and emergency services scaled back the large search of local running tracks to focus on a 300-metre area near the home.
“Expert medical advice is that if she’s in the bush, the likelihood of her being alive after last night is remote,” Inspector Seel said.
Ms Curry is a marathon runner and had been known to run from the house to Lorne and back – a 40km round trip.
“I think the likelihood of her running at night, especially on bush tracks is remote,” Inspector Seel said at the time.
“I can’t see her running along a bush track when it’s dark and it’s easy to fall.
“If she went for a run, I think it’s more likely it was in the morning.”
Inspector Seel added that Mr Curry was “doing it pretty hard” and had, along with the couple’s three children, been referred to counsellors.
