A UK-based model with a full beard is helping break down stereotypes of traditional beauty after being hand-picked to star in a fashion show.
Telling RocknRoll Bride, Harnaam Kaur said: “I always wanted to be like the pretty models, so I remember copying the way they posed and walked.”
“I grew up being told I was too fat, ugly, and disgusting to even model. I was told I’d never walk the runway.”
Her big break came when she was asked to open a fashion show for jewellery designer Marianna Harutunian at the Royal Fashion Day.
Kaur became the first bearded lady to model for a celebrity jewellery designer, and took to Instagram to put to rest all the bullying she’s received.
“I was laughed at when I said I wanted to model. Jokes on my bullies. Walk with your head up high and ooze confidence always.”
Kaur has polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which causes a hormonal imbalance in women, which for her means a lot of facial hair.
She started embracing and growing her beard from age 11 after years of self-shaming and self-harm.
“[My beard] is the source of my strength and confidence,” she said.
“We were born to be different and we were born to be amazing.”
