As his successor is chosen, either Hillary Clinton or a more likely Donald Trump, many Americans have taken to Twitter to express their sadness about saying goodbye to their current president, Barack Obama.
After eight years in the White House the Democratic leader will serve his last day as President on January 20, 2017.
There have been a number of radical changes that have occurred under the first black president’s leadership; national legalisation of gay marriage, health care reform, regulation of big banks, the elimination of Bin Laden, the creation of the international climate change agreement, and boosts in job growth to name a few.
While there were some areas Obama failed to address, pay equality and gun control being some, it’s likely that the 44th president of the US will only in retrospect be able enjoy full credit for his achievements.
Obama, who was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize after only nine months in office, is still heavily revered by his supporters and many of them have taken to Twitter to tell of how hard it will be to let go.
On Election Day Obama had a message to calm anxious voters.
“No matter what happens, the sun will rise in the morning, and America will still be the greatest nation on earth,” he said in a BuzzFeed News Live video on Tuesday evening.
POTUS called the 2016 election “exhausting, stressful, and sometimes downright weird,” but tried to reassure folks that he was sure America would come out on top.
“Whether your chosen candidates win or lose tonight, let’s all agree, not only to stay engaged, but to push ourselves to do even better,” he said.
We guess we will wait and see if he’s right.
