A bomb blast in Thailand has left at least 21 people dead and over one hundred injured.

As emergency services are rescuing injured civilians and recovering bodies from the scene, authorities are trying to work out who is responsible.

The blast occurred during peak hour in Bangkok (9:30pm AEST) near the Erawan Shrine where tourists and office workers were walking the street.

CCTV footage shows the bomb exploding and people running from the scene.

“It was a pipe bomb,” National Police Chief Somyot Poompanmuang told reporters.

“It was placed inside the Erawan Shrine.”

No Australians have been confirmed dead or injured yet, but Aussie musician Jimmy Barnes and his family were eerily close to the blast.

Only a last minute decision to take a different route to dinner kept Barnes and his wife Jane, daughter Elly-May, her husband Liam Conboy and their son Dylan safe from the explosion.

Jane Barnes tweeted: “A bomb or something has exploded in Bangkok, very close to us!”

Three hours later she tweeted: “We have been able to cross back to our hotel. Bombs diffused. Bodies still covered on road, terrible, so sad.”

A Thai hospital has confirmed over 117 people are injured, according to Fairfax, with most injured and killed from China and Taiwan.
