The infant was believed to have been suffering from a gastrointestinal disease when the family boarded the plane at Heathrow Airport on Sunday destined for China.

It has been reported that the baby fell unconscious during the flight and cabin crew were alerted. Attendants managed to find a nurse onboard who started administering first aid, reports the Mirror.

Given the situation the pilot made an emergency landing at Almaty Airport in Kazakhstan where medical help was on standby but the baby, believed to be named Jasmine, was pronounced dead shortly after.

The baby’s parents, reportedly a French father, 32, and a Chinese-French mother, 36, made the harrowing decision to continue their journey on flight CX256 to Hong Kong with their dead baby.

Passengers told Hong Kong news website Apple Daily that the parents were “emotionally distraught throughout the rest of the flight”.

The airline is yet to make any official statement but airlines warn against sick passengers boarding flights due to the risks that a lack of urgent medical attention can pose – especially on long haul trips.
