The Australian women’s Rugby 7s team have come out on top at the Rio Olympics scoring a gold medal after a triumphant win over rivals New Zealand.
Though the Kiwis received a try early on in the first half, the Aussies came out swinging in the second for a 24-17 win.
The win was Australia’s first gold medal for a women’s team since the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. It has brought Australia’s total gold medal count up to four, moving us into second place behind China.
The women’s side had already made history in the lead-up to Rugby’s Olympic return when they became the first Australian team to win the World Series after they took out the 2015-16 title.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull congratulated the team on their efforts via Twitter.
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten also congratulated the team on a job well done.
The faster-paced and (arguably) more exciting brand of the game– ‘Rugby 7s’– made its Olympic debut in Rio.
Who run the world? GIRLS!
