Australian men pay $30,000 to avoid rape sentence

Three men will return to Australia today after paying $30,000 in compensation to a backpacker they pleaded guilty to gang raping in Croatia.

The men were arrested in July last year after they attacked and raped a Norwegian woman in the bathroom of a Split nightclub. The men claimed the sex was consensual.

They have been in custody since but have now been released and allowed to return home on the condition that they plead guilty to the rape and each pay the woman’s family $10,200.
