Last night’s incredible phenomenon, the Aurora Australis, certainly put on a show!
The mesmerizing sight appeared over the skies of Tasmania and Southern Victoria last night, leaving the night sky purples, green, yellow, blue and pink.
The spontaneous phenomenon was caused when “electrically charged electrons and protons accelerate down the Earth’s magnetic field lines and collide with neutral atoms in the upper atmosphere”, according to the ABC.
Families all over the bottom half of Australia raced out last night to capture some of the magic with their cameras and posted these incredible pictures on social media.
Check out some of our favourites here.

@russellcharters: Last nights Aurora was amazing. So worth the drive
@camblakephotography: A brilliantly clear evening tonight at Cradle Mountainin @tasmania – a lot quieter than last nights huge Aurora event, tonight was perfect for clear, standard, star photography.
@fiona_gumboots: Last night was so amazing. I’m still on a high…
@david.c13: I’ll admit to being on edge as I stumbled through the cold, pitch black national park armed only with a headlamp, Swiss army knife and camera. Fortunately the sky was clear and the camera captured all the light and colours my eyes couldn’t see. After a close encounter with a feisty possum on the walk back, I’m pleased to be able to bring you Cradle Mountain at night. Feel free to join the dots on the Southern Cross.
@bmzgram: || Captivated || – We were getting hit by a lot stronger, much brighter Aurora last night, so I had to have another crack!!
@sandarellee: Another from the other night! What a brilliant night.
@tassiegrammer: Just one more shot from the Aurora Australis on Wednesday the 7th October 2015. This night will go down in history as one to remember for those who witnessed this spectacular display.
@lovethywalrus: I have no idea what I’m pointing at – it just seemed like a good idea at the time! Wednesday nights #aurora was out of this world, though before it erupted in beams, swirls and columns, we had this smooth arc cast across the sky. We thought it was lovely – we just didn’t know what was to come next!
@johny.cook: Last minute decision yesterday evening to make a dash over to Mt Cook. Saw something in my rear view mirror and delighted it was the lights.
@abel_photography_tas: Smal trip up Mount Wellington last light with @jontywall and @annanclancy to catch the Auroa.
@cinartophotography
@photo_rangers: Aurora Australis last night. Man o man, what a sight!
@craig_richards_photography: This is my one of my captures of the #aurora from the crags near #portfairy #Australia on Wednesday night Setting ISO 4000 F2.8 30sec 14mm
@tassiegrammer: So I promise this will be the last Aurora Australis image that I post from last night, until at least tomorrow anyway. I love the beams and columns that are rising up here and the bioluminescence that is visible in the water .
