The celebrated philanthropist and media matriarch passed away peacefully at her home, Cruden Farm in Langwarrin, Victoria, in the company of her family.

Dame Elisabeth was the wife of Sir Keith Murdoch and the mother to four children. She is survived by 77 living descendants including five great-great grandchildren.

Her son, News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch said his mother would be greatly missed, having left behind a legacy of philanthropy and generosity.

“We have lost the most wonderful mother but we are all grateful to have had her love and wisdom for so many years,” he said in a statement.

“Throughout her life, our mother demonstrated the very best qualities of true public service.

“Her energy and personal commitment made our country a more hopeful place and she will be missed by many.”

Dame Elisabeth was a passionate supporter of charities and the arts, and has many scholarships, institutions and monuments named in her honour.

Despite being matriarch to one of the biggest companies in the world and mother to a media magnate, Dame Elisabeth, renowned for her selflessness, was adamant in her belief that “making money is not greatness”.

“We’re not here for ourselves in the world, we’re here to help others,” she once said.

Described by her son as “more than a believer, she is a doer”, Dame Elisabeth was an active benefactor to more than 100 charities including Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital, the Deafness Foundation, the Victorian Tapestry Workshop board, the Victorian College of the Arts, Opera Australia and the Australian Ballet.

Her marriage to Sir Keith Murdoch lasted 24 happy years until his death in 1952.

Tributes have been flowing in for the much-loved matriarch on social media.
