AFL drug scandal: Jobe Watson hands Brownlow back

“The fairest and best thing to do is to give it back and honour the history that has gone before me."

Essendon skipper Jobe Watson has decided to hand back the Brownlow Medal he won in 2012 after serving a suspension for an anti-doping code violation.

Watson, who along with 33 team mates has not played all year, said it had been distressing to have his integrity questions.

“It is with mixed emotions that I have decided to hand back my 2012 Brownlow Medal,” Watson said in a statement.

“It is now up to the AFL Commission at their meeting on Tuesday to make a decision as to what they want to do with it.”

The AFL commission was planning to discuss whether to strip Watson of the league’s top award next week.

Last month a Swiss court opted not to hear a group of 34 past and present Essendon players’ appealagainst their doping bans following the AFL club’s supplements saga.
