$9 to pick up your own parcel

The hated “while you were out” slip is about to come at a cost.
$9 to pick up your own parcel

Australia Post will charge customers up to $9 to pick up undelivered parcels from August 1.

News.com.au reports that a change to delivery services will see customers paying up to $9 to collect parcels from their local post office.

Undelivered parcels are currently held at post offices for 10 days before they are returned to sender. The new rules will see that holding period extended, but at a cost.

Parcels will now be held for free for just five days. After that, fees will be charged for collection on a sliding scale, increasing by $3 per week until 30 days when the parcel will be returned to sender.

“Most customers want to pick up their parcel quickly, with 92 per cent of parcels collected within five days,” an Australia Post spokesman said.

“We believe this service will help the small amount of customers who can’t collect their parcel straight away.”

“They have told us they want to avoid parcels being returned to sender and they would go out of their way to pick it up sooner to avoid the fee.”
