The incident took place on a property near Young, in New South Wales and at this stage, it is not confirmed how the young boys came to be in possession of the weapon.

A statement has been issued by NSW police which reads:

“Police have been told the boy and a friend were in possession of a .22 rifle which discharged and a round ricocheted into the face of the boy.”

Following the accident, the young boy was rushed to the local hospital, then flown to Westmead Sydney children’s hospital for specialist treatment.

Despite the shocking circumstances of the accident, the boy is said to be in a stable state, and the injuries are, thankfully, being reported as non-life threatening.

While Officers have installed a crime scene at the property, they do not believe there has been any foul play or suspicious circumstances in this case.

The incident follows another from late last month, where a toddler was shot dead in her Sydney home.

The three-year-old girl was shot dead inside her home in Lalor Park, western Sydney and it is believed the wounds were self-inflicted after she somehow came to be in possession of a gun.

7 News reported the toddler was at home with her mother and three brothers, aged between three and eight.

Police confirmed both the child’s father and uncle were nearby at the time of incident but not in the house.
