A 10-month-old baby is in critical condition after allegedly being severely beaten and burned at a home in Western Sydney.

Police were called to the address in Penrith on Sunday by paramedics, who were treating the little boy for substantial burns to his head, neck, chest and back.

It is believed the burns were caused by boiling water.

The baby also suffered significant head and facial injuries.

He remains in critical condition at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, where he is in an induced coma.

A 23-year-old man was arrested at the home and was charged with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm. He is not believed to be the baby’s father.

He has been refused bail and will appear in Penrith Local Court this morning.
