A woman has died after a freak wave swept her off the rocks and into the sea as she posed for a photo at Sydney’s La Perouse yesterday afternoon.
The 25-year-old woman, believed to be a Chinese tourist, was standing on the rocks of Bare Island, off La Perouse, smiling for photographs when the wave came from nowhere and knocked her into the ocean.
Police, ambulance and life savers arrived at the scene at around 3pm hoping to rescue the woman but it soon became apparent they were searching for a body.
After dropping green dye in the water, the woman’s body was recovered at 3.35pm.
Her friends were taken to Maroubra Police Station to give a statement.
