The calendar just ticked over to the first day of winter – and Mother Nature didn’t disappoint.

It’s going to be a white winter!

To celebrate the first day of winter yesterday, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and parts of Tasmania were treated to a fall of snow.

In what was a very timely snowfall, South-Eastern NSW was covered in a blanket of white overnight, with parts of the ACT and Tasmania receiving a light dusting. Alpine resorts like Thredbo, Perisher and Falls Creek (where the above video was bravely taken) experience temperatures of -7C with up to 20cm of snow.

It was a nice surprise for commuters and skiing enthusiasts (like the ones above – who are far, far braver than us), snow season in the ski resorts has officially opened with a fresh layer of snow – and there’s more to come.

Meteorologists have suggested that NSW can expect another shower tomorrow and the day after, but unluckily (or luckily, for some) for ACT, Canberra’s snow days are over – for the mean time.

“We’re expecting a few more snow showers to be moving through across the ranges today and also possibly tomorrow morning,” said Weatherzone senior meteorologist Rob Sharpe to the Sydney Morning Herald, “The temperature is going to be very cold up until about Friday morning, the temperatures are going to stay below freezing about the resorts. That means they’re going to be able to make a fair bit of snow throughout the next few days in the lead-up to the start of the ski season on the weekend.”
