To be honest, we didn’t even realise it had gone anywhere…
Vegemite is now owned by Australian company Bega.

In news set to put a rose in every cheek, Vegemite is now Australia-owned once again.

While we didn’t really think about the fact Vegemite was formerly owned by US-based company Mondelez International, it’s fair to say we’re excited that the spread we eat for breakfast, lunch and tea is back in Aussie hands.

The ABC report that Bega is using bank debt to pay for the $460million Vegemite return.

This comes as Bega took on the Australia and New Zealand products that fall under Mondelez International.

“Everybody loves cheese and Vegemite and I think that Bega Cheese and Vegemite are just a natural fit,” Bega executive chairman Barry Irvin explains.

First made and produced in Melbourne in 1922 by a man named Fred Walker, the Australian icon that is Vegemite has only changed ownership hands twice in its 90-year history.

During World War II, the spread was bought in bulk for soldier to eat because of the spread’s vitamin-B properties, and Australians still continue to love Vegemite on toast, a sandwich, in soups and even made into a tasty Vegemite dust to sprinkle on meals (it’s said to be a delicious flavour-booster).
