Having been in the industry since the age of eight, Wood says his mother, Debra, protected him from the wild parties and industry events where kids like him were preyed upon by powerful figures in the scene.
Whilst recently promoting his latest film The Trust, Wood steered conversation squarely to the shame that is lurking beneath the glitter and glam, comparing it to the Jimmy Savile cover up that shocked the UK.
“You all grew up with Savile — Jesus, it must have been devastating,” he said.
“Clearly something major was going on in Hollywood.”
“It was all organised. There are a lot of vipers in this industry, people who only have their own interests in mind.”
“There is a darkness in the underbelly — if you can imagine it, it’s probably happened.”
“[My mother] was far more concerned with raising me to be a good human than facilitating my career,” he said.
“I never went to parties where that kind of thing was going on. This bizarre industry presents so many paths to temptation. If you don’t have some kind of foundation, typically from family, then it will be difficult to deal with.”
Wood is not the first to lift the lid on this abhorrence that goes on. ‘80s child stars Corey Haim and Corey Feldman publicly disclosed the horrific abuse they both suffered at the hands of the rich and powerful men who guided their careers.
Both boys went on to have drug addictions, and Corey died at 38 after many visits to rehab.
