While the Melbourne Cup is known for its rowdy behaviour just as much as its horse racing, yesterday’s events seemed to be more tame than usual.
According to police, of the thousands of attendees just nine people were arrested for mostly minor drunken offences during the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington and 78 evicted from the race course.
Most race attendees seemed to want everybody to have a good time, including one merry Good Samaritan who interrupted a live news cross to fear for a stranger who might not be able to celebrate because they’d lost their wallet.
Channel Nine reporter Phil Wilmington was on-ground at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm for the Cup when his live cross was disrupted by a woman trying to find the owner of the misplaced item.
“Channel Nine, I think you need to know somebody has lost three dollars,” the gatecrasher informed Wilmington as one of her mates giggled and tried to pull her out of shot.
“Can you give that to the rightful owner?”
“I probably wouldn’t be able to find them,” Wilmington replied, “but if you give it to the security guard –”
“No, It’s important,” the concerned woman replied. “How dare you?”
The reporter watched as the woman was hustled away by her friends while she objected at the injustice of it all.
The woman was due to make an appearance on the TODAY show this morning and it’s believed her search for the wallet’s owner continues.
