Sunken treasure worth more than $3 billion has been found off the coast of Colombia.
The discovery was announced by Colombian president, Juan Manual Santos, on his Twitter account.
“Great news! We have found the San Jose galleon,” the President tweeted. The galleon sank off the coast of Cartagena more than 300 years ago. It was carrying gold, silver, gems and jewelry when it was attacked by a British warship.
Mashable has described the wreck as “the holy grail of shipwrecks.”
A US company called Sea Search Armada located the area of the wreck in 1981 but Colombia went to court to lay claim to the bounty. An American court ruled the wreck and its treasure belonged to Colombia in 2011.
