A group of girls from a little town north of San Francisco have launched a legal battle to join the local branch of the Boy Scouts, saying they’d rather be camping than selling cookies as Brownies.
The New York Times reports that the girls, who call themselves ‘the Unicorns’, have applied to join the 105-year-old organization, with one girl, Ella, 10, saying: “When we get into the real world, we’re going to have to work with other people who are, like, not just girls.”
There is a Federal law that prohibits discrimination by sex in the US, but the Boy Scouts are exempt.
The Boy Scouts recently lifted a ban on gay members, but girls are still banned.
“We understand that the values and the lessons of scouting are attractive to the entire family,” the national Boy Scouts organization told the Times, “However, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are year-round programs for boys and young men.”
