Prime Minister Tony Abbott has announced that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Bronwyn Bishop, has resigned.
The news was revealed at a press conference this afternoon. It follows on from the controversy over the past three weeks that started with the veteran MP hired a $5000 helicopter to get to a Liberal party fundraiser from Melbourne to Geelong.
“I have not taken this decision lightly, however it is because of my love and respect for the institution of Parliament and the Australian people that I have resigned as Speaker,” Mrs Bishop said in a statement.
Mr Abbott confirmed there will be a “fundamental review” of the ministerial entitlements system.
More to come.
