In a gruesome development of the human trafficking industry, police have discovered the partially decomposed bodies of at least 20 and perhaps as many as 50 immigrants in the back of a truck parked on the shoulder of an Austrian highway leading from the Hungarian border.
The Guardian reports that a city employee mowing the grass alerted police after noticing putrid liquid dripping from the back of the white refrigerated vehicle.
The back door had been left open. Upon peering inside, police found the bodies of people who appeared to have died some days ago.
The truck had Hungarian number plates. Channel 4 News’ Lindsey Hilsum tweeted that the “smell of death” at the scene was overwhelming.
It is not uncommon for immigrants to try to cross Europe in the back of trucks and vans. The practice is illegal and extremely dangerous. It’s believed the migrants suffocated.
