Five years ago today a humble photo-sharing app was born - and now everyone from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to your mum uses it.

Ladies and gents, time to post an artfully filtered snap of a birthday cake and candles, because today marks Instagram’s 5th birthday.

The humble app was once the home of snaps of people’s dinners, progress at the gym, and selfies. But these days presidents and royals use Instagram too – and many celebs use it as their most important promotional tool.

It’s the social media site that gave us THAT Oscars selfie, and quite literally helped perpetuate the dizzying career heights of the Kardashian clan.

Over five short years, some of Hollywood’s most iconic moments have happened thanks to good ol’ “Insty” and we couldn’t be more excited to reminisce about them.

The world’s most star-studded selfie reached icon status after being shared on Ellen DeGeneres’s account during the Oscars ceremony last year. Ellen captioned the pic, “If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars.”

This photo made history as the first ever official portrait of Princess Charlotte taken by Mario Testino and shared on Kennington Palace’s Instagram page @kensingtonroyal – yep even the Cambridges have Insta!

@whitehouse’s page is filled with incredible behind-the-scenes moments, including this beautiful #throwback to President Barack Obama’s wedding to wife Michelle.

This romantic pic of Kim and Kanye’s 2012 wedding WAS the most liked photo ever on Instagram… until it was usurped by a familiar face on the next slide.

Kim’s half-sister Kendall Jenner came along with this pic and raked in 3.1 million likes, knocking her sister off the top spot.

The Kardashians and Jenners may be tightly holding onto to the “most likes” record, but Taylor Swift (probably thanks to her numerous cat posts) is sitting comfortable as the number-one most followed person on the photo-sharing app.

Kylie Jenner has basically made a career out of Instagram and we are obsessed with everything she shares!

Who could forget when Caitlyn Jenner debuted on the cover of Vanity Fair and share this photo on her account. “Everybody has challenges in dealing with life. I’m so happy after such a long struggle and finally living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. It feels so good. Can’t wait for you to get to know her/me,” she famously wrote.

Quite literally anything Justin Bieber does on Instagram gets him a lot of attention – but this pic of the Baby singer with a dagger to his mouth reminded us that he is not a little boy anymore.

At 40, David Beckham is far above the average age of most famous instagrammers – but someone forgot to give him the memo! He joined the site ahead of his milestone birthday and quickly amassed a million followers in just one day.
