A garbage truck driver has been charged hitting and killing a 58-year-old woman pushing her 18-month-old grandson in a pram on Sydney’s Northern Beaches this morning.
The toddler was unharmed in the incident but the grandmother’s injuries were so serious that she died at the scene.
Inspector Ellen Kaserman told Seven News that though doctors were quick to the scene the woman was to too badly injured for them to save.
The incident occurred near Dee Why, while the pair were crossing Moorila Street at what locals describe as a particularly dangerous intersection in the area.
Upon finding out that her son was safe, the 18-month-old’s mother was first relieved and then struck with extreme grief at the tragic loss of her mother.
Witnesses say the scene was heartwrenching.
“It looked like they’d just been called from work, the father and the mother,” One woman told Seven News.
“It’s terrible; it’s the last thing you’d expect to happen and get that phone call.”
The 27-year-old man driving the garbage truck will face court in March, charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning death.
