As the wildfires in California continue to wreak havoc, Ellen DeGeneres has been forced to evacuate her home with wife Portia de Rossi and their pets.
The talk show host shared the scary news on Twitter before fleeing her beach house in Carpinteria, which she recently purchased for $18.6 million.
“Our house is under threat of being burned. We just had to evacuate our pets. I’m praying for everyone in our community and thankful to all the incredible firefighters,” she tweeted.
“Everyone in the Montecito area is checking up on each other and helping to get people and animals to safety. I’m proud to be a part of this community. I’m sending lots of love and gratitude to the fire department and sheriffs. Thank you all.”
According to TMZ, Ellen’s neighbors include Oprah Winfrey and Drew Barrymore.
“Peace be Still, is my prayer tonight. For all the fires raging thru my community and beyond,” Oprah wrote.
The fire, which is now being dubbed the Thomas Fire, has also forced actor Rob Lowe to leave his home. “Praying for my town. Fires closing in. Firefighters making brave stands. Could go either way. Packing to evacuate now,” he added.
Currently, firefighters are trying to contain six blazes in southern California, which cover over 200,000 acres. The fire is the fifth largest in California history, and is expected to get worse thanks to windy conditions and no rain in the forecast for at least 10 days.
“This is kind of the new normal,” Gov. Jerry Brown said. “With climate change, some scientists are saying that Southern California is literally burning up. So we have to have the resources to combat the fires and we also have to invest in managing the vegetation and forests… in a place that’s getting hotter.”
So far, one death has been linked to the natural disaster. Our thoughts are with all those affected during this difficult time.
