Following the nomination of two of our Women of the Future for NSW Young Australian of the Year, Canberra local, Nipuni Wijewickrema has been awarded ACT Young Australian of the Year.

Nipuni established GG’s Flowers out of concern that her younger sister, Gayana – a 16-year- old with Down Syndrome – would not be able to find employment after finishing school. A family-run business, GG’s Flowers now provides employment opportunities for people with special needs in Canberra.

At only twenty-two years of age, Nipuni is clear about her goals telling The Weekly, “in ten years I’d love to be employing hundreds of people with special needs”.

In addition to GG’s flowers, Nipuni also volunteers as a Lifeline counsellor and works with ACT Youth Advisory Council.
