Dame Quentin Bryce arrives to the Women of the Future Awards on Wednesday.

Speaking in front of an audience of Australia’s most powerful and influential women, including the likes of Julie Bishop, Lisa Wilkinson and Dr Kerryn Phelps, the former Governor-General of Australia discussed the increasing pressure on women.

“I think there’s increasing pressure on all of us, particularly on women who are taking on more and more responsibilities in every aspect of life. I’ve had too many conversations with women about the exhaustion of their lives.”

The former Governor-General of Australia says we need to “leave some time for the beautiful things in life”.

“I was a young woman, a lawyer in the law school teaching some remarkable people. I thought very seriously about whether or not I would go into politics to press the issues to which I had a passionate personal political and professional commitment.”

“I decided not to. I decided I wanted to stay outside of party politics and have the freedom to be a lobbyist and be a free wheeler.”

The Australian Women’s Weekly AGL Women of the Future Awards are a celebration of inspiring young women who are making a difference.

Now in its sixth year, the competition encourages young women aged between 18 and 34 with a great business idea, charity or creative venture to enter.
