The Barbie mania continues in 2024 as the fabulous pink movie can be enjoyed from the comfort of our couch from yet another streaming platform in Australia.
Don some pink pyjamas, grab some popcorn and make a fabulous drink to watch Mattel’s doll Barbie be brought to life like never before with Australia’s own Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig.
The 2023 record-breaking movie follows Stereotypical Barbie who suddenly experiences dark thoughts and flat feet – obviously there is more to this story.
“I didn’t want to portray Barbie as being vapid in any way,” Margot previously told TV WEEK. “The way our story is constructed, she can be anything – president, a Nobel Prize winner etc. You see how intelligent she is, but she hasn’t been exposed to as many concepts as she would in the real world.
“It’s a fine line of naivety without being unintelligent. We can play it up at times, but also tap into deeper conversations.”
Underlying the fabulousness of pink, is the subtle sexism women experience in the traditional day-to-day as perfectly depicted by America Ferrera’s character, Gloria.
“It is literally impossible to be a woman,” she began. “You have to be thin, but not too thin. And you can never say you want to be thin. You have to say you want to be healthy, but also you have to be thin. You have to have money, but you can’t ask for money because that’s crass. You have to be a boss, but you can’t be mean…”
As Barbie travels into the real world, the harsh reality settles in that Barbie didn’t improve the lives of women as they believed. To make matters worse, Ken (Ryan Gosling) brings back these patriarchal values to Barbieland.
We don’t blame Stereotypical Barbie for having an existential crisis when Ken kicked her out of her Dream House…
Barbie was a global phenomenon teaching girls to appreciate femineity, plus it brought it a total of 1.45 billion US worldwide.
