How to make your own princess tea cosy

What better way to ring in a royal wedding than some knitted Meghan Markle-inspired decor?

As the Royal Wedding gets closer, you’ll no doubt want to throw a viewing party with plenty of tea, cakes and elegant sandwiches.

So why not make yourself a Meghan Markle princess tea cosy for the big day? Follow the instructions below.

What you’ll need

  • 4 Seasons Brighton Cotton Blend 50g balls: 3 x white, 1 x neutral

  • 1 x Black F A 3mm crochet hook

  • 4mm crochet hook

  • Hobby fill

  • Scissors

  • Yarn needle

  • Tape measure

You can buy all of these from Spotlight.

SIZE (APPROX) 29cm from top of head to skirt edge, 50cm skirt circumference.

TENSION 20 sts x 6 rows to 10cm over dtr skirt patt using 4mm hook.

Beg upper body

Meghan Markle as her Suits character, Rachel Zane.

Using 3mm hook and white, make a magic ring, 1st round – 1ch, 6dcin ring, sl st into dc at beg.

2nd round – 1ch, 2dc in same st, 2dc in each st around, sl st into dc at beg …12 sts

3rd round – 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in next st, 2dc in next st, 1dc in next st, rep from around, sl st into dc at beg … 18 sts.

4th round – 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, rep from around, sl st into back loop of dc at beg … 24 sts.

5th round – 1ch, 1dc in back loop of same st, 1dc in back loop of each st around, sl st into dc at beg.

6th – 9th rounds – 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each st around, sl st into dc at beg.

10th round – 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 5 sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of last 4 sts, sl st into beg dc … 28 sts.

11th round – 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 10 sts, 2htr in next st, 1htr in each of next 6 sts, 2htr in next st, 1dc in each of last 9 sts, sl st into beg dc … 30 sts.

12th – 13th rounds – As 6th round.

14th round – 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 10 sts, htr2tog,1dc in each of next 6 sts, htr2tog,1dc in each of last 9 sts, sl st into beg dc … 28 sts.

15th round – 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 10 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in each of last 9 sts, sl st into dc at beg … 26 sts.

16th – 18th rounds – As 6th round.

At this point, stuff body to a couple of rows below last round worked.

19th round – 1ch, 1dc in same st,1dc in each of next 2 sts, dc2tog,(htr2tog) 3 times, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, dc2tog, (htr2tog) 3 times, dc2tog, sl st into dc at beg … 16 sts.

20th round – 1ch, work crab st in each st around, sl st into beg st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing on head.

Beg skirt

Using 3mm hook and white, turn upper body upside down. Start at the side 5th round of the upper body – 1st round – work 2tr in each front loop around (left when the back loops were worked into), sl st into 3rd of 3ch at beg … 48 sts. Using 4mm hook for rem of Skirt.

2nd round – 3ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in next st, 2tr in next st, 1tr in next st, rep from around, sl st into 3rd of 3ch at beg … 72 sts.

3rd round – 3ch, 1tr in same st, 1tr in each of next 5 sts, 2tr in next st, 1tr in each of next 5 sts, rep from to end, sl st into 3rd of 3ch at beg … 84 sts.

4th round – 1ch, 1dc in front loop of same st, 3ch, sk 2 sts, 1dc in front loop of next st, rep from to last 2 sts, 1ch, 1tr into dc at beg.

5th round – 1ch, 1dc around tr just made, 1tr in next 3ch sp, (3ch, sl st into top of tr just made, 1tr in same sp) 5 times, 1dc in next 3ch sp, 1tr in next 3ch sp, (3ch, sl st into top of tr just made, 1tr in same sp) 5 times, rep from around, sl st into dc at beg. Fasten off.

Princess Diana’s iconic 1981 wedding dress would work pretty well as a tea cosy too!

Divide for Handle and Spout Beg First Side

Using 4mm hook and white, 1st row – Join yarn underneath the ruffle where the 3ch of the last tr round was worked, 4ch (counts as dtr throughout), 1dtr in back loop

of next st, 1dtr in back loop of each of next 40 sts, turn … 42 sts.

2nd row – 4ch, 1dtr in same st, 1dtr in each of next 13 sts, 2dtr in next st, rep from to end … 46 sts.

3rd row – 1ch, 1dc in front loop of same st, 3ch, sk 2 sts, 1dc in front loop of next st, rep from to end.

4th row – Sl st into 3ch sp, 6ch, sl st into 4th ch from hook, 1tr in same sp, (3ch, sl st into top of tr just made, 1tr in same sp) 4 times, 1dc in next 3ch sp, 1tr in next 3ch sp, (3ch, sl st into top of tr just made, 1tr in same sp) 5 times, rep from to end. Fasten off.

5th row – Join white underneath the ruffle, make 4ch in back loop of first dtr of 2nd row, 1dtr in back loop of each st to end.

6th row – 4ch, 1dtr in next st and each st to end.

7th row – 1ch, 1dc in front loop of same st, 3ch, sk 2 sts, 1dc in front loop of next st, rep from to end.

8th row – Sl st into 3ch sp, 6ch, sl st into 4th ch from hook, 1tr in same sp, (3ch, sl st into top of tr just made, 1tr in same sp) 4 times, 1dc in next 3ch sp, 1tr in next 3ch sp, (3ch, sl st into top of tr just made, 1tr in same sp) five times, rep from to end. Fasten off.

9th – 20th rows – Rep 5th to 8th rows incl 3 times, working the 19th row in the whole st rather than just the front loops.

Beg Second Side

Join white under ruffle at the first free st next to the first side, 1st row – 4ch, 1dtr in back loop of next st, 1dtr in back loop of each of next 40 sts, turn … 42 sts.

Rep 2nd – 20th rows incl of first side. Sew in all ends on skirt.

Beg Ties (make 4)

Join white to the side of the outside 3ch sps of the 19th rows, make 40ch, sk first ch, sl st in next and each st to end, sl st into 3ch sp. Fasten off and sew in ends.

Beg Hand, Arm and Sleeve (make 2)

Using 3mm hook and natural, make a magic ring, 1st round – 3ch, 5dc in ring, sl st into 3rd ch at beg. Pull ring tightly.

2nd – 6th rounds – 1ch, 1dc in each st around, sl st into dc at beg.

7th round – 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, 2dc in last st, sl st into dc at beg … 7 sts.

8th round – As 2nd round.

9th round – 1ch, 1dc in same st,

1dc in each of next 2 sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of last 3 sts, sl st into dc at beg … 8 sts.

10th – 12th rounds – As 2nd round. Change to white, 13th round – 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 3 sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of last 3 sts, sl st into dc at beg … 10 sts.

14th – 19th rounds – As 2nd round.

Beg Upperarm

1st row – 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 6 sts, turn.

2nd row – As 1st row.

3rd row – 1ch, dc2tog, dc3tog, dc2tog … 3 sts.

4th row – 1ch, dc3tog. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing on to body. Stuff and sew on to upper body so that shaping at upper arms forms shoulders.

Beg Head

Using 3mm hook and natural, make a magic ring, 1st round – 1ch, 6dc in ring, sl st into dc at beg.

2nd round – 1ch, 2dc in same st, 2dc in next st, 2htr in next st, 2dc in each of next 2 sts, 2htr in last st, sl st into dc at beg … 12 sts.

3rd round – 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in next st, 2dc in next st, 1dc in next st, 2htr in next st, 1htr in next st, 2dc in next st, 1dc in next st, 2dc in next st, 1dc in next st, 2htr in next st, 1htr in last st, sl st into dc at beg … 18 sts.

4th round – 1ch, 2dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 2 sts, rep from to end, sl st into dc at beg … 24 sts.

5th – 11th rounds – 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each st around, sl st into dc at beg.

12th round – 1ch, dc2tog, 1dc in next st, dc2tog, 1dc in each of next 6 sts, 1htr in each of next 4 sts, 1dc in each of next 4 sts, dc2tog, 1dc in next st, dc2tog, sl st into dc2tog at beg … 20 sts.

13th round – 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 7 sts, 1htr in each of next 6 sts, 1dc in each of next 6 sts, sl st into dc at beg.

14th round – 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in next 6 sts, dc2tog 4 times, 1dc in each of next 5 sts, sl st into dc at beg … 16 sts.

15th round – 1ch, 1dc in same st, 1dc in each of next 6 sts, dc2tog twice, 1dc in each of next 5 sts, sl st into dc at beg … 14 sts.

16th – 17th rounds – 1ch, 1dc in each st around, sl st into dc at beg. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing the neck to the body.

Stuff head and neck and complete stuffing upper body. Sew head to dress neckline.

Finishing

For Hair – Cut 20cm lengths of black, then using another long length of black, sew the 20cm lengths individually to the head, stitching over each 20cm length at the halfway point. Start just above the neck at the back of the head and move up to the crown, sewing in every 2nd round. Trim ends.

Beg Face – Use black to sew eyes, eyebrows, nose and mouth as pictured.
