Watch: this painting being restored is strangely satisfying

Three hours later we're still watching this clip.

TV host, art dealer, art historian and proud whippet owner, Phillip Mould has managed to engage a much broader audience than the typical art aficionados through his latest series of Tweets.

Art restoration may sound about as entertaining as watching paint dry (ha!) but this video of Phillip clearing 200 years worth of yellowing from a Jacobean painting is mesmerising.

Little is known about the woman featured in the oil painting, apart from the fact she is 36-years-old.

Phillip Mould has explained the painting is known simply as Lady in Red and was originally painted in 1618.

The painting still covered in grime, before restoration started.

The art historian does not reveal the method and exact formula being used to remove the grime.

Mould does note in the clip the varnish “smells really bad.”

The final image has not yet been shared, but we will update this post as soon as it made public.

In the meantime, enjoy the mesmerising video.
