You’ve heard of the Pepsi Challenge, well here is the SUV Smart Buy challenge!

We challenged TV presenter, mum, author and producer Emmylou MacCarthy to guess which of these small SUVs is the smartest buy and offers best value for money.

Spoiler alert… there was one clear winner. Here are the features Emmylou loved about the Haval Jolion Ultra.

Luxe exterior

We all want our cars to look great, and Haval’s Jolion small SUV ticks all the boxes.

We love the stylish mesh grille, chrome accents and all round LED exterior lighting. When it comes to boot space, the Jolion is roomier than its competitor, easily fitting 430L (aka Emmylou’s entire shopping haul!) and capable of expanding to 1133L with the rear seats folded.

Haval’s new Jolion has got the look and feel of a premium SUV, for a fraction of the price.

Smart tech

Nope, it’s not a supercharged DeLorean from Back To The Future, but with a 12.3 inch multimedia touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, USB input, wireless charging and Bluetooth capabilities, the Jolion will be your tech-savvy best friend.

Get comfy with a power-adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, six-speaker sound system, Comfort-Tek leather interior and auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Superior safety

From preventing minor prangs to helping you avoid serious collisions, the Jolion’s safety features are intuitive, innovative and smart at every level.

There’s a 360 camera that not only gives you eyes in the back of your head, but a birds-eye view, making parallel parking a breeze. Autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection means you’ll never have to worry about a pedestrian stepping out in front of you or a cyclist hot on your front end.

It also boasts blind-spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, lane assist, speed assist, driver fatigue monitoring. That’s a lot of safety features!

A huge range of smart safety features puts the Jolion ahead of the rest.

Peak performance

Whether or not you’re a speed-demon like Emmylou, or simply want to know your car can handle itself with the best of them, the Jolion has your back.

Powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, this zippy SUV packs a punch. Unlike its competitor, drive is also fed to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Another point to the Jolion!

Low price

The ultimate sign of a smart buy is the price. With its impressive features, superior look and performance, Emmylou guessed that the Haval Jolion Ultra would be at least $45,000, with its competitor likely coming in at around $31,000.

To everyone’s surprise, the cars were roughly the same price, with Car A (Haval Jolion Ultra) priced at $33,990 and Car B (Mitsubishi Eclipse ES) costing $32,690.

Even better news for those with different budgets, the Jolion Premium kicks off from $28,490 drive-away, with the Lux model from $30,990 driveaway.

Now that’s a smart buy!
