British celebrities and members of the royal family have taken part in a new viral social media campaign, set up to thank the amazing healthcare workers risking their lives to treat those affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
The #ClapForOurCarers and #ClapForNHS hashtags have seen thousands of everyday Britons, as well as high profile stars, film themselves giving a round of applause in support of the UK’s National Health Service workers.
The heartwarming campaign was started by British yoga teacher Annemarie Plas, who came up with the idea after seeing a similar campaign take off in her home country, the Netherlands.
She encouraged all UK citizens to clap together, on cue, at 8pm London time, in their homes while in self isolation. In videos shared on social media, the collective sound of clapping can be heard out of windows and even on the street, as the whole nation came together to thank their tireless medical workers.
“What I’ve seen in my home country made me look a little deeper into it and I saw the boost that it gave to the frontline and the togetherness it brought to the people that were stuck in their homes,” she told UK media outlet The Mirror.
“So far it has been heart-warming, to know that more people feel like this,” she said.
“Just do it, there is no special training of talent needed, and when you hear your neighbours you hopefully feel that you are not alone in this.”
