Aldi Australia has issued a statement recalling its popular Expressi Travel Mug 400ml in stainless steel due to burn concerns, and happy customers are not so happy about having to give their favourite mug back.
According to Product Safety Australia: “The lid may not lock securely and may come off under pressure,” potentially leading to a “risk of scalding to the user.”
Aldi says it takes “product quality and safety seriously” and, on its Facebook page, advised customers to return the product to the place of purchase for a full cash refund.
All Expressi Stainless Steel 400ml Travel Mugs purchased from Aldi between May 10 and June 6 this year should be immediately returned.
The post on Facebook received more than 500 comments, with most of the responses from disgruntled customers refusing to give their cups back.
“Mine is fine and you cannot have it back. Plus, my coffee is never hot enough to burn so I don’t think I’ m in any danger of anything other than having to clean my car,” commented one customer.
“Am not returning mine!!!! Love it!! Aldi you can keep my $7… wish I had bought a bunch more!” said another.
“I use my mug almost everyday and I’ve never had a problem. I’ll be keeping mine also.”
This isn’t the first time the supermarket chain has had its products recalled. The brand’s Bakers Life Hot Dog Rolls 6 pack was urgently recalled in July 2016 due to the “potential presence of foreign objects (metal shavings) in the product.”
Woolworths also recalled a selection of mince in October 2016 after it was found to be potentially contaminated with metal fragments.
Product recalls aren’t uncommon, but they can pose a serious threat if aren’t brought to attention quickly.
