Octogenarian Delores Dennison had all but given up on going to a high school prom until her great-grandson asked her to be his date.
Austin Dennison, 19, surprised his elderly grandmother when he phoned her up to ask her to attend his high school prom.
“At first she was a bit resistant,” Austin told Fox News. “I assured her I was serious and she finally said yes. It was my privilege to take her.”
As a young lady growing up in the depression era Delores was unable to attend her own prom because times were tough and money was tight but, just one birthday shy of ninety the great-grandmother finally got to be the bell of a high school ball.
“He was so sweet and adamant about it,” Delores told reporters when asked about how her handsome kin approached her. “I asked him, ‘But are you sure that you wouldn’t like to take one of the young ladies who could get out there and do everything with you?’ He said no. ‘I want you’.”
After Delores agreed to go the biggest hurdle was much the same as any girl attending a dance – what do I wear?
“That was an adventure,” Delores said. “We were looking at the young girls dresses. None of those dresses would be OK for me.”
Delores eventually went with a pastel blue dress and matching purse and after first going for a pre-prom dinner with her handsome date she received a standing ovation as she and her date walked arm-in-arm across the hall.
“It was wonderful and I just loved all the girls in their fancy gowns and the gentlemen in their tuxedos. It was quite a night,” she said. “Everyone there just could not have been more polite. Everyone got an A+.”
And how did her date rate?
“He was a perfect gentleman. He was everything you would expect of a young man.”
