Hollywood is notorious for its celebrity divorces, so some couples have famously tried to combat that by agreeing to open marriages.
While most of these duos haven’t outright admitted to engaging in this type of lifestyle, they’ve certainly alluded to it — like Angelina Jolie did in a 2011 interview.
“I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship,” the mother-of-six told German magazine Das Neue three years before she tied the knot with Brad Pitt. “It’s worse to leave your partner and talk badly about him afterwards. Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together. We make sure that we never restrict each other.”
Unfortunately for the duo, their nonchalant attitude didn’t work out for them in the end, and Angie filed for divorce in September 2016.
Below, we hear what other celebrity couples have to say about opening their marriages up.
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith
After rumours surfaced that the long-time couple had an open marriage, Jada told Howard Stern: “Here’s the deal with that. You’ve got to trust who you’re with. And at the end of the day, I’m not here to be anybody’s watcher. I’m not [Will’s] watcher. He’s a grown man.
“Here’s what I trust — I trust that the man that Will is, is the man of integrity. So, he’s got all the freedom in the world. As long as Will can look himself in the mirror and be okay, I’m good.”
Dolly Parton and Carl Dean
The singer has a deal with her rarely-seen husband, whom she married in 1966. “If we cheat we don’t know it, so if we do cheat, it’s very good for both us,” she explained.
“I don’t want to know it, if he’s cheating on me. If I’m cheating on him, he wouldn’t want to know it. And if we do, if that’s what’s making it work, then that’s fine too.”
Tilda Swinton and John Byrne
The actress confessed that she and her former partner, with whom she has two kids, had multiple lovers while they were together.
“It may seem odd but it is certainly the best thing for the children,” she explained. “It’s not something I try to promote as a radical lifestyle choice.”
