Joan Lyons looked like any other bride when she married her childhood sweetheart Craig last week – but everything changed at the reception.
After a traditional ceremony, Joan kicked off her reception by having her head shaved in the middle of the dance floor to support her new husband who is battling terminal pancreatic cancer.
Joan donated her shorn locks to an organisation that makes wigs for sick children and encouraged wedding guests and anyone else who wants to support them to donate to charities on their behalf.
“On our wedding night, our celebration party will also serve as a fundraising event where I will complete my head shave task in his honour and to honour and support those affected by life limiting illness,” Joan wrote on her fundraising page before her big day.
“Charities such as this rely on public support and funds to help support families and sufferers during difficult times. Please help us to help others, no matter how big or small, every penny matters and will be received with heartfelt thanks.”
The Lyons’ lovely wedding was captured by photographer Kimberley Struth and her husband Anthony, who own Struth Photography. They donated their service through Gift of a Wedding , a UK charity that provides free wedding to people with terminal illnesses.
