Hear that? That high-pitched sound? Sounds a bit like a flock of seagulls? Loud screeches of joy?
It’s the sound of the Women’s Weekly editorial floor today – and largely the soundtrack to my working life.
One of our ‘family’ announced her engagement this morning. She returned from a mini-break to Hawaii with a sparkler on her finger and a grin from ear to ear. Cue the raucous reception and the breathless demands to know every detail of the proposal (okay — mostly from me. Hey, I’m a journo. I like a good story.)
And that’s pretty much how we roll in here. In between the steady stream of cakes from the Women’s Weekly Test Kitchen (we triple test every recipe – they have to go somewhere) and the racks of clothes, mountains of books and countless hundreds of amazing stories about Australian women that pass through this office every month, there’s the steady hum of life events as a backdrop.
An engagement here, a wedding there, the birth of a new baby. An illness, a relationship breakdown, the passing of a loved one. And when you’re madly rushing to finish your Angelina Jolie cover story or busy convincing someone to share their story in the pages of the country’s oldest, most-respected magazine – it’s good to have these real life touchstones.
So join me in congratulating our newly betrothed staff member. And raise a glass to life.
