Seeing double: The royals have worn the same outfit on more occasions than you’d think

One of the perks of being a royal is being styled by the world’s greatest and most influential designers.

Indeed, we’ve seen some of our favourite duchesses and princesses decked out in some of the most drop-dead gorgeous fashion ensembles, but just because you’re a member of the monarchy, it doesn’t mean your outfit is an original.

Over the years, we’ve seen the royals wear the exact same outfit, perhaps with a tweak or two, but it’s not too surprising when you think about it.

Royals, especially the women, often have to adhere to strict dress codes that require them to not show off too much skin but still look glamorous for a state banquet or charity gala.

From the ever-stylish Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge through to the less-reported-on Swedish royals, take a look at some of our favourite occasions when royals have worn the same ensemble. We’d say who wore it better, but we genuinely can’t pick one!

Pink dress

We thought Carole Middleton’s 2022 Ascot dress looked familiar! Her daughter Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge wore the same pink midi dress from London label ME+EM in 2021 during an engagement in Scotland.

Jenny Packham dresses

Jenny Packham twins! For one of her official portraits shared for her 50th birthday, Crown Princess Mary wore the designer’s Georgia gown from the AW19 Collection. If you thought it looked familiar, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge has worn the emerald green Tenille gown (the updated version of the Georgia dress) by the British designer on her official tour of Pakistan in 2019 and at the 2021 Royal Variety Performance.

Green dress

On her state visit to Ireland with Prince William, Duchess Catherine glittered in an emerald green Vampire’s Wife dress. And William’s cousin Princess Beatrice wore the same dress for The Dior Sessions book launch afterparty in October 2019.

White dress

Princess of Sofia of Sweden stunned in this white Self-Portrait dress at a State Banquet in June 2019 whilst Duchess Catherine wore the same dress (with the slit) back in 2016.

Erdem dress

This floral Erdem dress has not just been worn by Duchess Catherine at the 2019 RHS Chelsea Flower Show but also by the Duchess of Kent at Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding plus, Princess Eugenie at the 2019 Royal Maundy service at Windsor Castle.

Carolina Herrera red coat

This Carolina Herrera red coat looked great on Duchess Catherine in Belfast in 2019 and equally lovely on Princess Sofia of Spain when she attended the country’s National Day military parade in 2016.

When Duchess Catherine and Crown Princess Mary were pregnant, they wore the same Malene Birger maternity coats only in different hues.

Emilia Wickstead dress

Duchess Catherine is a big fan of Emilia Wickstead and has this chic flared dress in both green and lilac. But it’s also hanging in Crown Princes Mary’s wardrobe and she wore her blue version in Tokyo’s Shibuya district in 2015.

Jenny Packham gown

Duchess Catherine’s Jenny Packham gown is a personal favourite of ours, but did you know Princess Madeleine of Sweden wore the same gown in light blue for the 2013 New York Green Summit?

Project D dress

Crown Princess Mary wore a blue Project D dress for the christening and naming ceremony of Princess Athena in 2012 and Pippa Middleton wore the same frock to Wimbledon the same year.

Red skirt

Duchess Meghan donned a red leather Hugo Boss pencil skirt to a roundtable discussion about gender equality as part of the One Young World summit in 2019 and that same year Spain’s Queen Letizia wore the same skirt on a visit to Seoul, South Korea.

Princess Beatrice was pretty in pink in her Emilia Wickstead dress at the Trooping the Colour celebrations in 2019. Perhaps she borrowed it from her aunt Countess Sophie who wore the same one to Royal Ascot in 2018?

Ok now we really are seeing double. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden stepped out in the same Nina Ricci dress her mother Queen Silvia wore back in 1995 to Nobel Prize Awards ceremony for the 2018 ceremony.

Crown Princess Mary looked radiant in this printed Vilshenko dress on a visit to Tokyo and so did Princess Charlene at Monaco’s annual traditional Pique Nique Monegasque.

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden was feeling peachy in Ellie Saab at her nephew Prince Alexander’s christening in 2016 and a year later, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands wore it to the Champalimaud Centre in Portugal.
