Crown Princess Mary of Denmark has demonstrated her unwavering dedication to sustainable fashion in one of her most divine recycled gowns to date.

Appearing with husband Crown Prince Frederik at Amalienborg Palace on Tuesday night, the Australian-born royal wowed in a powder blue caped Valentino gown.

Featuring floor-length sleeves and a perfectly tailored silhouette, Mary previously donned the dress for a 2019 engagement in Japan.

But the fashion-forward royal, who has been known to rewear her favourite designs on multiple occasions, wasn’t content with simply recycling this number.

Instead she had one subtle alteration made to the gown, adding delicate lace sleeves in a coordinating shade of blue that totally elevated her look.

Pairing the dress with understated Manolo Blahnik heels and diamond earrings, Mary wore her hair straight and tucked behind her ears to let her Valentino gown do the talking.

She and Frederik were attending one of the Danish royal family’s first galas at Amalienborg Palace since the pandemic began in 2020.

They were accompanied by His Excellency the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, who is currently touring through Europe, but as always it was Mary’s style that stole the show.

Not only was her outfit a subtle nod to her work promoting more sustainable fashion practices, it also proves that caped dresses are very much here to stay.

Gowns like Mary’s have become something of a royal staple in recent years, with British royals and other European princesses donning similar designs when they want to make a sartorial statement.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex wore a similar red Safiyaa cape dress in March of 2020 during her so-called “farewell tour” of the UK with Prince Harry, before their royal exit.

She also previously donned a blue frock from the designer that was almost identical during her and Harry’s 2018 visit to Fiji, and wore a cream Dior cape dress in Morocco in 2019.

In 2019 Monaco’s Princess Charlene was photographed in a floating green Marchesa Notte caped dress and Queen Letizia of Spain wore a red one-shouldered Stella McCartney cape dress in 2017.

Even Mary has been spotted in other caped gowns before, most notably a lilac gown with a sparkling embellished cape she wore to a court banquet at Tokyo’s Imperial Palace in 2019.

But it’s Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge who stole the show when she wore a glittering bejewelled Jenny Packham cape dress to the premiere of a James Bond film in 2021.

The gown made headlines around the world and as Mary continues the style trend in 2022, we have a feeling this royal staple isn’t going anywhere.
