When an unnamed Vietnamese couple welcomed their twins, the father’s family were concerned that one twin looked so different to the other.
As time went on, the difference became more pronounced and they eventually pressured him into a paternity test which revealed that he was the father to only one twin reports ABC news.
Bi-paternal twins – twins with different fathers – are extremely rare, and occur when two eggs are fertilised by two men during the same ovulation cycle.
“Our Centre for Genetic Analysis and Technology lab has tested and found a pair of bi-paternal twins,” Le Dinh Luong, president of the Genetic Association of Vietnam, said.
“This is rare not only for Vietnam, but for the world,” he said.
The mother’s DNA was also tested in order to rule out a hospital mix up, reports Vietnamese newspaper Tuoi Tre, but she was found to be the biological mother to both of the babies.
The twins, who are now two, were the same sex, born on the same day just hours apart, but looked completely different with one having thick wavy hair and the other having fine, straight hair.
