When Jessica Jenkins was 18 years old, she was dealt the shocking blow that she had cervical cancer. Not only that, but the cancer treatment used to save her life rendered her infertile.
Now 21 and in remission, Jessica and her husband Rhys hold their six-day-old son, Jack in their arms – and it’s all because her mum, Julie Bradford, gave her daughter the incredible gift of surrogacy.
Yes, the 45-year-old hairdresser, who in South Wales in the UK, told the Daily Mirror that her new grandson is “a Christmas miracle”.
“If cancer couldn’t beat us there was no way I wasn’t having a baby for Jessica,” she says.
Fortunately for Jessica, this is all possible because doctors were quick to help her harvest her eggs before starting radiotherapy three years ago.
Jessica says that the process of harvesting eggs is supposed to take four weeks, but her quick-smart doctors managed to do it in two.
From there, Julie’s IVF treatment began and, in an eerie, yet remarkable twist, Julie found out she was pregnant with Jack on April 9 this year – exactly two years to the day that Jessica was told she could never have children.
“I cannot believe I’ve gone from facing death with cancer to facing my first Christmas with my son in just a few years,” Jessica reflects.
“My mum is my hero, she has shown me what true love means, I can never repay her for what she has done for us and the sacrifices she has made.”
“It just shows you how, no matter what life throws at you, you should never give up, because anything is possible.”
