When you’re pregnant, there are certain enjoyable things you have to miss out on – eating soft cheese is one and drinking a gin and tonic is another. But one thing you don’t have to give up, despite what you might have heard from your grandma, is sex!
Yes there are going to be times when you’re feeling nauseous and tired and sex will be the furthest thing from your mind, but there are also going to be times (usually around the second trimester when your genitals and breasts have increased blood flow to them) when your libido can become stronger than you’ve ever know it to be and sex will be all you think about.
Don’t worry, unless advised specifically by your doctor, sex is absolutely safe for you and the baby because not only is it protected in the womb by a tough sac of amniotic fluid there’s also a mucus plug inside your cervix that covers the opening to your uterus.
Of course, your growing belly might make some positions a bit difficult (you can forget the upside-down reverse lift for a while) but there are still plenty of positions you can enjoy without your bump getting in the way.
Woman on top
Get him to lie on his back or sit in a comfy chair and then, either facing him or the other way, slowly ease yourself on top. One of the good things about this one is that you can control the movement and the angle depending on how you position your body.
From behind
Kneel on all fours and get him to enter you from behind. He’ll be able to get nice and deep, which, in those engorged-genital times, will be just what you need. You can alternatively do this leaning over the bed (or the couch or even the kitchen table), but just be sure you have something soft to lean on.
Spooning
This is probably the easiest and most comfortable sex position you can do during pregnancy, especially in the later stages when your belly is well and truly grown. Have your man curl up behind you and enter you from behind. Stretching your leg back over his will allow him to get deeper inside you, and, when he reaches around the front, his hands are able to pleasure you and massage your breasts too.
Don’t forget that sex isn’t just about intercourse. There are all sorts of other things you can do like massaging, mutual masturbation, using sex toys and oral sex, although please make sure he refrains from the practice of blowing air up into the vagina. In some case it can cause an air embolism (a blocked blood vessel) and that can be quite harmful to you and your unborn baby.
