It should come as no surprise to find out that a lot of girls have imagined how their boyfriend will propose to them.
It’s a common fantasy: your handsome boyfriend down on one knee, smiling brightly, with your friends and family looking on, producing a beautiful ring, dropping that ring in the ocean…
Wait a minute.
This fantasy-gone-wrong became a reality for one unfortunate groom and his very patient bride, when 25-year-old North Carolina man accidentally dropped his precious engagement ring into open water.
Matthew Picca was in the midst of proposing to his long-term girlfriend, Kayla Harrity, in front of friends and family when, unexpectedly, the ring slipped from the box, through the cracks of the jetty they were standing on and into the depths of the sea.
“I turned around and he was getting down on one knee,” the bride-to-be told a news station, “As he opened the ring box, the ring fell out of the box and fell through the cracks on the deck and into the water. I didn’t even get to see it before it dropped.”
“I covered my face and began to cry because I knew my boyfriend was devastated,” said Kayla, “Matthew did not even get to say anything to me before the ring fell into the ocean.”
“We all kind of stood in shock for a minute and then a few people were saying, ‘The water’s not that deep, go look for it,'” said Matthew.
And look for it they did.
Matthew jumped into the waves with a bunch of friends, family and, of course, the bride herself.
“At the bar, there were three men who were enjoying a beer who saw the whole thing,” said Kayla, “They must have felt bad for us and did not want to see our engagement end like this. They jumped in the water and helped look for the ring.”
As it turns out, the search for the ring went just about as smoothly as the proposal itself.
After dropping his almost-fiancee’s brand new iPhone into the water (insult to injury, or what?) and having to source 10 emergency flashlights and 5 pairs of goggles in a pinch, the ring was found after nearly two stopping hours.
And the story has a happy ending, as well.
“Everyone at the bar was cheering. All of a sudden, everyone was chanting, ‘Propose again! Do it again!’” said Kayla, “It was the best feeling in the world. My fiancé, soaking wet, smelling like salty, fishing water, proceeded to get down on one knee and put the beautiful ring on my finger!”
A fairytale ending after all!
