Losing a parent is one of life’s greatest heartaches, but five years on, Nicole Kidman’s late father is still front of mind in her thoughts.
The 52-year-old Oscar winner has taken to Instagram to pay tribute to her dad Antony Kidman, who died in 2014, and her post to mark what would’ve been his 81st birthday will bring a tear to your eye.
On Wednesday, Nicole shared a sweet throwback photo of herself and her dad smiling at the camera, but it was her caption that really pulled at the heartstrings.
“Today would have been my Papa’s 81st birthday ❤️ I love and remember him every day xx,” she wrote.
Nicole’s post was met with messages of support and love, with fans remarking how similar the father and daughter look.
“So sorry for your loss. We keep those that matter the most to us forever in our hearts never forget what you shared and keep his memory with you always,” one fan wrote.
Channel Ten’s entertainment reporter Angela Bishop, who lost her husband Peter Baike in 2017 also commented, “Birthdays can be the toughest. Sending lots of love.”
Antony Kidman, a well-respected Sydney psychologist, died in September 2014 after suffering a fall while he was in Singapore visiting Nicole’s younger sister, Antonia, now 49, who was living there at the time.
Speaking on The Ellen DeGeneres Show just a month after his death, Nicole spoke about the importance of speaking about loss and grief, rather than pushing those feelings down.
“Everybody loses their parents and it’s awful. I’m sorry to bring everybody down but at the same time I’m trying to navigate through something right now and I’m amazed when people reach out because it’s an awkward thing at times but to have people go ‘I’m so sorry for your loss,’ the power of that, even a note or anything, I’ve gotten so much love from people,” she said.
“There’s something about when you realise someone else has gone through a similar thing or is going through a similar thing, it really connects you.”
It’s not often that Nicole shares family photos on her Instagram account, but the mother-of-two most recently shared a candid snap of herself and daughter Sunday Rose taking a stroll together.
In the photo, Nicole was dressed in a turtle-neck sweater and black pants as she walked slightly behind Sunday, 11, in a skirt and boots, at what appears to be their home in Nashville, Tennessee, judging by the autumnal surroundings.
“Sunday walk with Sunday,” the actress captioned the image, along with the hashtags: #MotherDaughter and #Happiness.
