When Casi Rott went in for a scheduled C-section at 34 weeks to deliver her triplets, she was over the moon when they were welcomed to the world safe and healthy.
The three newborns joined the family of seven, which Casi and her husband Joey had two daughters, aged 2 and 6.
Tragically, the proud mum never got to welcome her babies to her Kansas home. One week after giving birth to Levi, Asher and Piper, Casi died from a blood clot in her lungs.
Her 33-year-old husband was naturally blindsided by the tragedy.
“We were so focused on the triplets,” Joey told People. “The last thing we thought we had to be concerned about was Casi.”
Joey said that during the pregnancy, Casi did all she could to stay as healthy as possible.
“She did everything she had to do for those babies,” he said. “She took all her vitamins, she went to the doctor when she was supposed to.”
After the triplets were successfully born, Casi stayed with them in the hospital for four days, even breastfeeding them.
But two days after she left the hospital, with the newborns still in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), she woke during the night with chest pains and a fast heartbeat.
A CT scan showed she has a blood clot in her lungs.
After remaining in the hospital for a few days, doctors said she’d be ok.
“We thought it was behind us,” remembered Joey.
Then the chest pain returned. On the way to the hospital to check it out, she passed out.
“She wasn’t moving the entire time. I didn’t know if she was breathing,” Joey said.
“But it was too late. The people at the hospital did all they could do. They worked on her for over an hour.”
Joey and the family are taking it day by day.
A GoFundMe page to help them has raised more than $134,500.
“After Tenley was born, Casi said to me, ‘If something every happens to me, just make sure the kids know how much I love them.’ That stuck in my head,” Joey said.
“That’s one thing I’m going to make sure I tell them all the time.”
