Speaking to 7 News, she said even the idea that something like this is possible had left her, “shocked and quite sick.”

Katie McMurray originally purchased the baby monitor thinking that it would make her life as a young mum easier.

The high-tech monitor would allow the Katie and her partner Sean to keep an eye on her three-month-old daughter, Chelsea, both from another room but also through an app which can be downloaded to a phone.

The West Australian reports that while this was the case initially, things took a sinister turn on Tuesday night while Katie was changing her baby’s nappy.

The iris of the camera appeared to switch on and began to follow her around the room.

Her partner, Sean said he was also very worried saying,

“I feel like we buy these things to make sure our kids are safe, and then you don’t know who is watching.”

As they investigated their concerns further, they were shocked to find red foreign language on the apps screen, something they had not seen on the app previously.

The developments were extra shocking considering the couple had taken all necessary precautions including installing a password on the monitor.

Experts warn that any technology that operates using WIFI needs to used with caution, as it is all trackable and traceable.

“Be careful, anyone could be looking at your children,” Katie told 7 News.

Parents can protect their families by ensuring they update default passwords, and keep software up-to-date at all times.
