A mother has lashed out at Big W on Facebook for its young girls’ clothing compared to boys’ clothing, with the post getting 60,000 likes and thousands of comments in just five days.
All Nikita Friedman, a parent from Emerald, Queensland, wanted to do was get her one-year-old daughter a pair of shorts, and instead, she was disgusted with how inappropriate the selection was.
She posted a photo to the Big W Facebook page, holding up a pair of size one girls’ shorts in front of boys’ shorts in the exact same size. The difference is shocking, with at least a few inches in length separating them. Friedman wrote “Why on earth does my 1 year old need to have shorts so short that her nappy is hanging out??”
“Little girls are not sex objects. Gender bias is disgusting,” she continued.
Nikita was praised for bringing attention to the issue, with many commenting on the post in agreement. “The simple fact is that numbers talk and maybe seeing 1600 parents (so far!) agree with my post after only 5 hours might make Big W stand up and listen for once what parents want,” she wrote.
Nikita later added to the post: “We’re all just trying to be the best parents we can. I want to teach my child about self-respect, modesty and confidence from a young age.”
Big W commented publicly, responding with: “We will certainly discuss yours and other views posted to this thread with the relevant team, those responsible for buying kidswear ad where appropriate, respond back to you directly.”
Let’s hope they do.
